Happy Pride!
June is Pride Month across most of the United States (and many parts of the world), and this year will see the Lake Norman area enjoying its 2nd Annual Pride festival.
Pride is a time for celebration of the uniqueness and beauty of LGBTQIA individuals and to let those who are still afraid to come out to know that they are not alone. Celebrations – filled with members of the LGBTQIA group and their allies – seek to show that there is welcoming, supportive community that values those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, regardless of where they fall “on the rainbow.”
Pride originated in New York City in June 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, during which patrons at The Stonewall Inn stood up to raids by the NYPD, who were seeking to enforce anti-homosexuality laws. The ability of the community to come together and stand up for itself is one of the themes often seen in Pride celebrations.
While much has changed since 1970, unfortunately, members of the LGBTQIA community continue to find themselves isolated and unsure, and, as a result, they may be dealing with depression and anxiety. Especially at risk are youth, who may find themselves the subject of bullying. Thankfully, mental health professionals and groups such as The Trevor Project provide resources and support for these kids.
The team at Horizon Psychological Services is LGBTQIA-affirming and welcoming to members of the LGBTIQIA community who are looking for support and care.
