Areas We Serve

Rooted in the Lake Norman Community

Horizon Psychological Services has called the Lake Norman area home since 2010, providing psychological care to children, teens, and adults across some of the fastest-growing communities in North Carolina. From our office in Cornelius, our team of psychologists, therapists, and diagnosticians works with families throughout Mecklenburg, Iredell, Cabarrus, Lincoln, and Catawba counties — a region anchored by the largest man-made body of fresh water in North Carolina and shaped by a steady influx of new neighbors over the past two decades.

Lake Norman covers more than 32,500 acres with over 520 miles of shoreline — more coastline than the Atlantic coasts of North and South Carolina combined. That mix of suburban convenience and lakeside lifestyle has drawn families, professionals, and retirees in increasing numbers, and growth in the area has consistently outpaced state and national averages.

The Lake Norman Area by the Numbers

  • Huntersville, the largest community in the lake area, grew to 61,376 residents in the 2020 Census — a 31% increase over the prior decade.
  • Cornelius, our home base, has grown to roughly 32,800 residents, with a median household income near $113,000.
  • Davidson has reached approximately 17,000 residents with a median household income around $166,000.
  • Concord, on our southeastern edge, now exceeds 116,000 residents.
  • Roughly 17–20% of residents across our core service area are under the age of 15, reflecting the family-heavy character of these communities.

Why Mental Health Care Matters Here

Growth brings new opportunities — and new pressures. Long commutes into Charlotte, school overcrowding, life transitions, and the everyday demands of modern family life all take a toll. The data reflects what we see in our consultation room every week:

  • Roughly 1 in 4 North Carolina adults report symptoms of anxiety or depression. (KFF North Carolina Fact Sheet)
  • The share of NC children ages 3–17 with a diagnosed depression or anxiety condition rose from 7.6% in 2016 to 11% in 2022 — nearly a 50% increase in six years. (NC Child)
  • About 128,000 NC youth ages 12–17 experience depression each year. (NC Newsline)
  • One in five NC high school students seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021. (NC Youth Risk Behavior Survey, via NC Child)

Behind every statistic is a person — a parent, a teenager, a partner, a friend — who deserves thoughtful, evidence-based care close to home.
