A common question that is asked is, how do I know if I should see a therapist?
Obviously, I’m a bit biased, but I’m a believer that if you are asking the question, chances are you might benefit from a session or two with a therapist. Many times, an individual just needs a chance to talk about the stresses in their life with a nonjudgmental person who can keep the information private. It’s a chance to have a private sounding board and get some feedback in order to determine if the course you are on is a good one or needs a little adjustment. In fact, this is so common that many clients only attend one session of therapy, according to research by psychotherapist Dr. Moshe Talmon.
For some, it’s a chance to release thoughts and feelings that have been bottled up inside, and that act, in and of itself, leads to feeling better. For other people, attending a therapy session can help them to realize that there are things they want to change in their life and that they are ready to start down that road.
A good, ethical therapist will help you to identify whether your concerns require further sessions or whether it seems as though you have things under control or on a good path. Being a good therapist is attempting to work ourselves out of a job – and we are more than happy to work towards that day.
If you’re wondering whether therapy might be something to explore and whether you should see a therapist, feel free to reach out to one of our therapists at Horizon and make an appointment.
