Get To Know Therapist Sandra Jackson, MSW
For many mental health professionals, the journey to becoming a therapist is a winding road. For Sandra Jackson, a social worker at Horizon Psychological Services, the path to becoming a therapist was not a direct one. Ms. Jackson (or Ms. Sandra, as her younger clients call her) graduated from high school and believed that she did not have the ability to pursue her original dream: becoming a lawyer. While she had had hopes of attending law school, she said that her “low self-esteem” was a barrier that kept her from that track, and, instead, she pursued a degree in paralegal studies.
But staying in the legal field was not the end goal for Ms. Jackson. Adulthood and being a single parent to a special needs child brought a number of stresses and difficult situations that she had to learn to find her way through. “After carefully reflecting on how I wanted to give back, I decided to pursue my master’s of social work,” she said. “Because of my own past traumas, I felt called to support others through theirs.”
Ms. Jackson has been working at Horizon Psychological Services since 2021. “I love working with kids and teenagers,” she said. “I love watching my clients begin to believe in themselves and their ability to make changes. Hearing my younger clients say they love coming her always makes my day.”
In her free time, Ms. Jackson enjoys walking on nature trails and watching football, especially the Philadelphia Eagles. She has participated in numerous walking challenges and relays across the country.
When asked what advice she would give to someone who is on the fence about reaching out for her, she said, “Tell yourself: If I do not call, I will not know what could happen…so let me just call.”
